“In the language of symbols, birds stand for the soul, just as deer stand for the beloved, a tree stands for life, and a pomegranate for abundance, whether of good virtues or of learning or of earthly riches.
The three-ply string that borders the text evokes the verse from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, “Two are better than one…. and the threefold cord is not readily broken”.

The verses in the circle are: “Ah, you are fair, my darling; Ah, you are fair, your eyes are like doves” (Song of Songs 4:1), and “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; He browses among the lilies” (there, 6:3).
