The cutout design around the text space comes from Kurdistan Jewry. The deer on both sides of the tree stand for the beloveds as they are portrayed in the Song of Solomon.
The verses quoted are:
Top bow:
“As a lily among the thorns, so is my darling among the maidens. Like an Apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the youth”, Song of Songs 2:2-3.
Bottom panel:
“My soul is attached to you”, Psalms 63:9.
In Hebrew, when un-punctuated, it reads both ways: as said to a man and as said to a woman.
