Such pierced plaques were once used to keep track of the date by moving a piece of wood or a bead from hole to hole as the days went by. The calendar was found in the excavations of the pool in the Spring House in th City of David. It is dated to the first half of the First Temple period, from the tenth to the eight centuries BCE.
